Ted Turner in 2008…Still An Idiot

I recently read a review for the new book “The War Against Fertility,” which chronicles the “population control” movement, its ties to racist Margaret Sanger and Nazi Germany and its full flowering in the early 70s, when it neatly dovetailed with the environmentalist movement (“Save the Earth for those of us already here”, basically).

It brought a lot of things into focus for me, like why I heard so much about “the population explosion” as a kid (in the 70s, when it was presented as one of the things that would wreck the world in my lifetime, along with pollution and war), and why I didn’t hear much about it from the 80s on (basically because of India’s failed eugenics policies, China’s despised “one child” rule and President Reagan’s refusal to fun any American programs that pushed sterilization or abortion at home or abroad).

Now apparently Ted Turner has emerged as a new champion of the “Stop Global Warming Through Birth Control” crowd, cementing his position as Number One Liberal Dolt in the US (take that, Jane!) in an interview with Charlie Rose, where he painted this grim picture of our near future:

“We`ll have eight degrees — we`ll be eight degrees hotter in 10 — not 10, but in 30 or 40 years. And basically none of the crops will grow. Most of the people will have died, and the rest of us will be cannibals.

Civilization will have broken down. The few people left will be living in a failed state like Somalia or Sudan, and living conditions will be intolerable. The droughts will be so bad, there will be no more corn growing.

We`re too many people. That`s why we have global warming. We have global warming because too many people are using too much stuff. If there were less people, they`d be using less stuff.

We`ve got to stabilize population. On a voluntary basis, everybody in the world has got to pledge to themselves that one or two children is it.”

Uh-huh. Even the dippiest liberal couldn’t believe everyone on Earth would take such a pledge, much less honor it. Which means there would soon be legislation to force compliance, the same as laws to replace regular light bulbs with compact flourescents, or reduce our “carbon footprint” in other ways. Do what we say, it’s for your own good.

Assuming any human activity is driving up the temperature, it couldn’t be that a few people like Ted Turner (and Al Gore) are more to blame than any twenty “regular” folk, now could it? Who’s a bigger threat, really? A couple and their five kids in Jaipur, Capetown or Poughkesie, or a guy who travels the globe in a private jet every week, has 50 “personal” vehicles and lives in a compound the size of the Mall of America?

We don’t have too many people, we have too many privileged millionaire idiot activists trying to tell us how to conduct our personal lives. Get rid of them and there will be plenty of resources left for the rest of us. Besides, as plump and backbone-free as they are, they’ll make much better eating when we all turn to cannibalism.
